We all know that to maintain oral health, there are two essential things we have to take care of. One, our oral hygiene with good dental care practices. Two, regular checkups with our dentist. And what is the most important thing that we cannot avoid when it comes to dental hygiene practices?

Brushing.

Here we are going to see the importance of brushing and how to brush in the right way.

Read on!

Why Is Brushing Important to Our Oral Health?

Brushing helps you remove the accumulated waste food particles, which could cause bacterial growth, resulting in plaque and tartar. This can lead to several dental issues, including:

  • Gingivitis, which can worsen into periodontitis,
  • Tooth cavities, and
  • Tooth decay.

If these are not treated on time, these infections not only affect your dental health but can also cause health problems in other parts of your body. It could increase the risk of dementia, heart diseases, respiratory infections, or even oral cancer.

Most dentists recommend using electric toothbrushes, which are more efficient in removing plaque than conventional toothbrushes.

Brushing Techniques

Here is a list of brushing techniques that you can implement in your daily brushing routine.

  • While brushing, hold the toothbrush at a 45-degree angle to your gums. This will help in cleaning the gum line more efficiently, removing all the plaque from the gums.
  • Move the brush back and forth in tooth-wide strokes in a gentle way. Brushing too hard can affect your gums and teeth.
  • When you brush, start from the outer surfaces, then the inside surfaces, and finally the chewing surfaces.
  • Cleaning the inside surface of the teeth in the front row can be difficult. Therefore, tilt the brush vertically and then move it up and down.
  • Also, dentists recommend brushing your tongue. This can help in removing the bacteria on it.

Other Dental Care Practices

As we discussed, brushing is only a part of your dental care routine. You also need to make sure to:

  • Floss every day
  • Drink eight glasses of water per day
  • Avoid cigarette smoking and chewing tobacco
  • Adopt a nutritious, well-balanced diet plan
  • Make regular (once every 6 months) dental appointments

These will ensure that you have healthy teeth and gums and prevent oral health problems.
