When to Take Your Baby to the Dentist

You might find it bizarre to take a toddler to a dentist. Just because they have not developed a complete set of teeth doesn't mean that they don't need regular dental checkups. Well, as your child is yet to know about worldly things, you have to make them aware of the basics, including a dental clinic. Generally, you should take your baby to the dentist once they have acquired their first tooth. That is when they turn six to twelve months old.

Your child's first visit to the dentist

You might be anxious about what a dentist might do to your child in the very first dental visit. Stay calm. As the child is too young, the child would be made aware of its surroundings during the first visit. It would ensure that they feel safe and comfortable in the new environment.

This would then be followed by a friendly introduction to the tools and equipment, such as the chair they would soon sit. This would indeed help them feel secure and make it easier for them to come and see the dentist regularly in the forthcoming years.

After all the introduction and the warm-up session, when the dentist finds that the child is feeling comfortable with its surroundings, he/she would make the next move- allow the child to sit in the dental chair. They would then gently examine the mouth of your child and suggest anything needed. They check for signs of cavities and guide about the ways to prevent them.

Importance of taking your baby to the dentist

Just like you need time to acquire a taste for new places, your child too needs it. The earlier they are made familiar with their oral hygiene needs, the better it would be for them. After all, sooner or later, they would have to sign up for regular dental checkups. Hence, if the baby is educated about oral hygiene at such a tender age, they won't dread visiting a dentist at a later stage.

During the first visit, the dentist would guide them properly to take care of the teeth and gums. The dentist would also share some tips with you and your baby on how to prevent cavities.

The most crucial point would be that taking your baby earlier to the doctor helps the child to speak clearly and chew naturally from the very beginning.
